DDC Check 21 Image Exchange Services allows the bank to exchange check images for both forward and inclearing cash letter image exchange processing with the Federal Reserve and/or Endpoint Exchange.
Downstream banks without Check 21 capabilities will have Image Replacement Documents (IRDs) i.e. Substitute Checks prepared by the image exchange partner at their curent rate for all "Direct Branch" and "Direct Merchant" check images.
Service includes all hardware and software at DDC to exchange Balanced files in formats required by both Federal Reserve and Endpoint Exchange. Allows for paper checks processed at DDC on Non-electronic endpoints to continue to be forwarded
in paper cash letter to existing correspondent banks.
How the Check21 image exchange process works:

FedForward Image Deposit Service Image Cash Letter Deposit
The Federal Reserve's FedForwardSM Image Cash Letter Deposit offers "later-than-paper" deadlines that allow you to significantly improve availability. When you deposit a mixed image cash letter of forward collection items,
the Federal Reserve will clear the items and present either substitute checks or an electronic file to the paying bank.
DDC "Direct Branch" Capture Services allows a bank using the DDC Check 21 Image Exchange Service to capture items at each branch and submit these to DDC for virtual encoding and proof. All balanced transit items will be released for virtual 100%
image exchange to Fed and/or Endpoint Exchange. This eliminated the need for any item encoding, or proof balancing at the bank and eliminates need for courier transport of the physical items to DDC. Teller transaction balancing is required and re-scan requests will be performed at branch.
Image Exchange w/ Branch capture and/or Merchant Capture

DDC "Direct merchant" Check Deposit Service allows a bank using the DDC Check 21 Image Exchange Service to offer commercial or other high volume deposit customers the ability to make deposits directly from their office or home with extended banking
hours possible by scanning their checks and self-balancing each deposit. The balanced deposits are processed directly by DDC.
